"Great Dane Portrait in Acrylics"

Author: candienjames, Contributing Editor

The title of my painting is Fortitude because of the strong nature and presence of the great dane.

For this painting I worked on a 16"x20" studio quality Dick Blick canvas, using Liquitex high viscosity paints.

A thank you to Crias for providing the reference photo to the WetCanvas Image Library.

I appologize for not including
an earlier pic.

The first step is pretty simple,
I used a natural sponge and
various shades of burnt
sienna and titanium white to
create a studio background
effect.

I then took my golden taklon
flat and blocked in the outline
of the dog using a thin but still
opaque layer of paint, making
sure to leave plenty of tooth
on the canvas.

(I have included my easel in the
photo to give some indication
of size.)
At this point I have just filled
areas in using grey to give a
better foundation for the shading.

I wanted to get in enough of the
details to see if all the main
components were in right.
At this stage I wanted to add some white.
I did this by dragging my brush across the
tooth of the canvas, from the area that I
wanted the lightest, until it blended into
the grey shadow area.

I also added some colour to the eye.
I then used a mix of Cadmium Red Medium Hue with Titanium White for the tongue and the pink showing in the ear.

I also added a touch of white for the highlight in the eye.

I deliberately worked with a limited pallette as I felt this would bring out the strong statuesque solidness of the Great Dane breed.
